چکیده

Forecasting is of prime importance for accuracy in decision-making. For data sets containing high autocorrelations, failure to account for temporal dependence will result in poor forecasting. TES (Transform-Expand-Sample) is a class of stochastic processes to model empirical autocorrelated time series and is frequently used in Monte Carlo simulation. Its merit is to capture simultaneously both the empirical distribution function and the autocorrelation function of a stochastic process. In addition, its analytical background makes it a viable tool to forecast future values of time series data. In this paper, we utilize phase-type random variables as the innovation variable in the TES model fitting methodology. We investigate the forecasting performance of TES processes and

Poisson-Lindley INAR(1) Processes: Some Estimation and Forecasting Methods

This paper focuses on different methods of estimation and forecasting in first-order integer-valued autoregressive processes with Poisson-Lindley (PLINAR(1)) marginal distribution. For this purpose, the parameters of the model are estimated using Whittle, maximum empirical likelihood and sieve bootstrap methods. Moreover, Bayesian and sieve bootstrap forecasting methods are proposed and predict...

The Role of Imagistic Simulation in Scientific Thought Experiments

Interest in thought experiments (TEs) derives from the paradox: "How can findings that carry conviction result from a new experiment conducted entirely within the head?" Historical studies have established the importance of TEs in science but have proposed disparate hypotheses concerning the source of knowledge in TEs, ranging from empiricist to rationalist accounts. This article analyzes TEs i...

Bidirectional Estimation and Confidence Regions for TES Processes

TES (Transform-Expand-Sample) is a versatile class of stationary stochastic processes which can model arbitrary marginals, a wide variety of autocorrelation functions, and a broad range of sample path behaviors. The TES modeling methodology aims to simultaneously capture the empirical marginal distribution (histogram) and autocorrelation function of empirical time series, assuming only that the...

Monthly runoff forecasting by means of artificial neural networks (ANNs)

Over the last decade or so, artificial neural networks (ANNs) have become one of the most promising tools formodelling hydrological processes such as rainfall runoff processes. However, the employment of a single model doesnot seem to be an appropriate approach for modelling such a complex, nonlinear, and discontinuous process thatvaries in space and time. For this reason, this study aims at de...
